Dr. John Chambers

One of Holbein’s latest portraits is this depiction of King Henry VIII’s personal physician. The background and inscription were subsequently renewed, and the age of the doctor was incorrectly recorded as 88. In fact he was only 73 when he was portrayed by Holbein for a group picture of Henry VIII’s physicians together with this individual study. By making the composition both simple and monumental, Holbein focuses fully on the depicted subject’s features.
