Dead Christ Supported by Angels, about 1720

The scene of angels carrying the body of Christ upwards was invented as a devotional picture. However, in this Late Baroque variation on it, the intention is more to inspire the viewer to admiration for the composition and brilliant artistry than to mystic contemplation. The existence of numerous versions painted for clerical dignitaries demonstrates the admiration that Trevisani’s invention inspired.
