Country Fair in Schelle

This picture is considered one of the loveliest and most balanced of Jan Breughel the Elder’s landscape compositions. It can be seen as a synthesis of two of the most frequently occurring types found in his work: the village or street view, and the river landscape with ships. Here a specific event is recorded, the country fair at Schelle, a village near Antwerp, on the Feast Day of Peter and Paul, June 29, 1614. To the left in the foreground the artist has depicted himself with his family, as occurs in other paintings of his.
