Clarinet

19th century | Johann Baptist Merklein

The clarinet in Ab (high) was an instrument in military bands popular in Austria and Bavaria in the 19th century. In Vienna the high clarinets tuned in F or G were called “Picksüßes Hölzl”, meaning literally “sickeningly sweet piece of wood”, due to their high and penetrating sound. As usual, at that time the instrument was made of boxwood and the thin parts of the corpus like receiver-areas were reinforced with rings of wood, bone or ivory. (bd)
