Cimon and Iphigenia

about 1617 | Peter Paul Rubens

The narrative of this novella in Boccaccio’s Decamerone tells the story of Cimon who, despite his high birth, is not interested in education or manners. But when he sees the beautiful and cultured Iphigenia, he decides to earn her love by acquiring all the knowledge that is necessary for a nobleman. For the still life with fruit, and the landscape Rubens had the help, as so often, of the painters Frans Snyders and Jan Wildens.
