Brotherhood Bowl, so-called Bratina

This richly enamelled covered vessel set with pearls and precious stones is a Russian friendship cup. These cups were used for taking a welcome drink or were placed on a grave, filled with syta, i.e. honey dissolved in water. This bratina was one of the gifts sent Tsar Feodorovich of Russia on the occasion of the marriage of the polish King Ladislaus VI to the Archduchess Caecilia Renata of Austria in 1637. Under the rim there is an enamelled Russian inscription clearly setting out the name and full title of the donor. The lid is crowned by the Polish white eagle with the king's monogram.
