Breakfast Still Life with a Covered Goblet

The apparently careless symmetry of the composition, which consists of a few horizontal and vertical elements (table, plate, goblet) makes it appear almost accidental. With a few subdued colours, Heda depicts, on the one hand, the shining surface of the objects but gives them, on the other hand, soft, ample shapes. The bringing together of such contrasts gave the still-life painting of Haarlem classical significance in the second quarter of the 17th century.
