Barn with Goats

about 1640/45 | David Teniers d. J.

In his early pictures Teniers imitated the dark peasant scenes of Adriaen Brouwer but at the same time lessened Brouwer’s characteristic graphic vividness and coarseness. The lively light and dark of these early paintings was replaced in later ones by brighter shades of colour in keeping with the lightness of these cheerful scenes. Such rural pictures were at the very bottom of the academic hierarchy of genres but were very popular with collectors.
