Bandits Attacking Travellers

about 1650/60 | Philips Wouwerman

Wouwerman never worked in Italy himself, but he was much influenced by other Dutch artists who did so, the so-called “Italianate” painters who dealt primarily with southern motifs. Scenes with soldiers and highwaymen were painted with particular frequency and were an important aspect in Wouwerman’s work. The artist had a virtuoso ability to convey the drama of the attack with the liveliness of his figural composition and by integrating the landscape into the dramatic situation.
