Apollo and the Muses
1684 | Ignaz Bendl
Probably born in Prague, Johann Ignaz Bendl was a painter, sculptor and engraver, but was particularly esteemed as an ivory carver at the court of Emperor Leopold I. He is documented in Vienna from about 1680. These twelve reliefs of mythological scenes were created at the same time as his large stone reliefs for the base of the plague column on the Graben in Vienna. The wine cask in the Bacchanal bears the signature and the date 1684.
