Adoration of the Shepherds

about 1640/43 | Pier Francesco Mola

This scene is influenced by the pastoral or shepherd pieces of the Bassanos, a Venetian family of painters, from the late 16th century. Indeed Mola belongs in general to those artists resident in Rome around and after 1630 who wished to rejuvenate High Baroque painting by consciously keeping in mind the Venetian art of colour painting. The colours toned down to brown, and the warm use of light-dark from which shines the blue-red-white of the group in the middle, produce a romantic mood which yet has something solemn to it.
