Madonna and Child

ca. 1550, Artist: Tilman Riemenschneider

Madonna and Child

With his large, well-organized workshop, Riemenschneider created numerous sculptures for churches. This large figure of Mary once surely stood at the centre of an altarpiece. It shows the Virgin as “Woman of the Apocalypse,” with a golden mantle and crescent moon. The nudity of the infant Jesus, put demonstratively on display, emphasizes the human nature of the Son of God.
