Saint Gregory with Scribes

The panel depicts Pope Gregory the Great (r. 590 – 604) – to whom the Holy Spirit in the shape of a dove is dictating prayers – and the scribes who copy them. The masterfully carved relief is among the most important works of its kind from the Early and High Middle Ages. It originally adorned the cover of a sacramentary.
