St. Genoveva

around 1470/75 | Hugo van der Goes

When closed, the “Diptych with the Fall of Man and Salvation” on its outer side (today split off) showed St. Genoveva in shades of grey as a stone sculpture in a niche. The grisaille technique lends the figure a certain three-dimensional character. St. Genoveva, Patron Saint of the city of Paris, is depicted with her attribute, a devil blowing out the candle.
