The Lamentation of Christ

This panel originates from the High Altar of the Chapel of the Order of St. John in Haarlem. This altar is the masterpiece by Geertgen tot Sint Jans, the most important master of Dutch painting of the 15th century. The “Lamentation of Christ” formed the inner side of the right wing. The centre panel with a Crucifixion of Christ and the left wing were destroyed during the Iconoclasm or the Siege of Haarlem by Spanish troops.
