In Motivwahl und Bildaufbau sind die Landschaften, die der junge Gainsborough im heimatlichen Suffolk malte, der holländischen Landschaftskunst des 17. Jhs. verpflichtet. Die mit lockerem Pinselstrich gemalten, schwingend bewegten Formen, das in unregelmäßigen Flecken verteilte Licht und die sanft abgestimmte Farbigkeit kennzeichnen jedoch einen stilistischen Wandel zu spielerischer Leichtigkeit.
