The Lamentation of Christ

circa 1618/1620 | Anthonis van Dyck

This Lamentation, which was influenced by a Rubens painting, depicts in a masterly manner the various emotions provoked by the body of Christ: the weeping mother of God stands above her son, her desperate gaze turned upwards while St. John stands in deep meditation in the background. Mary Magdalene on the right bids Jesus farewell by gently kissing his hand, the putto in the foreground has broken down with tears. On the left the crown of thorns, nails and the inscription from the cross are further reminders of the suffering of Christ. Inv.-Nr. GG 486
