Old Woman at the Window

about 1660/65 | Gerard Dou

This scene with an old woman watering flowers at a window has been painted so close-up and illusionistically that it has become an example of trompe l’oeil (from French: “deceive the eye”; Dutch: ogenbedrieger). Dou varied the motif of the window in many of his paintings. His trick of joining several zones of the picture together further increases the three-dimensionality.
