The title of privy councillor was awarded by the emperor to especially deserving, high-ranking personages, such as ministers, university professors or big industrialists. The appointment made them members of the court and permitted them to appear at court festivities in the magnificent court uniform that had been introduced in 1814. The evening dress of dark-green cloth with black velvet trim on the stand-up collar and cuffs is decorated with rich gold embroidery (oak and laurel shoots, large palm-leaves). (MKR)
