Hagar, von Abraham schwanger, floh vor dessen eifersüchtiger Frau in die Wüste. Der Engel des Herrn befahl ihr zurückzukehren, und Abraham heißt sie willkommen: er scheint zwischen den Frauen vermitteln zu wollen. Obwohl Gewandtypen der Antike eines Raffael und Annibale Carracci folgen, sind Cortonas Figuren bewegter, vielgestaltiger, in ihrem Schwung Ausdruck des gemessen erhöhten Lebensgefühls des Barock.
