Römisch, Mittlere Kaiserzeit, 2. Jh. n. Chr., nach griechischem Original des Polyklet um 440 v. Chr.
Die Statue des Jünglings geht auf ein Meisterwerk des Polyklet aus dem 5. Jh. v. Chr. zurück: Ein junger Mann - wahrscheinlich ein Athlet - steht entspannt auf seinem rechten Bein, in der Linken trägt er einen Speer (daher die Bezeichnung "Doryphoros" = Speerträger). In der frühen Klassik entstehen erstmals Statuen, die mit Stand- und Spielbein den menschlichen Körper leicht bewegt erscheinen lassen. Dieser "Kontrapost" ist auch in dieser Statue des Polyklet exemplarisch ausgeführt. Sie gilt als plastische Umsetzung des "Kanon", eine Studie Polyklets zu den idealen Proportionen des menschlichen Körpers. Die erhaltene Kopie nach einem Vorbild aus Bronze stammt aus der römischen Kaiserzeit.
