Skarabäen sind Siegel oder Amulette in Form des Mistkäfers Scarabaeus sacer. Der Käfer war ein Symbol für den Gott Chepri, "den Werdenden", der in der Vorstellung der Ägypter aus dem Nichts entstanden ist. Eine besondere Art des Skarabäus sind die Gedenkskarabäen. Vor allem König Amenophis III. ließ diese zu verschiedenen Ereignissen wie Heiraten oder Bauvorhaben herstellen. Der Löwenjagdskarabäus berichtet über 102 Löwen, die Amenophis III. in seinen ersten zehn Regierungsjahren erlegt hat.
