1538, Attributed to: Brescia (?)
This impressive portrait of a well-dressed man in his mid-thirties dates from a period when Lombard-Venetian cultural life was particularly open to new ideas. The artist remains unknown, but his use of a simple, reserved tone and a sophisticated but limited colour scheme indicates that he possessed a strong artistic personality and that he was interested in the work of portrait painters in the North.
