University Square in Vienna

1758/61, Artist: Bernardo Bellotto, gen. Canaletto

University Square in Vienna

Of all the views of Vienna painted by Bellotto, that of the University Square is the one that has remained basically unchanged to the present day. At the centre is the old university’s assembly-hall building (today the Austrian Academy of Sciences) built by Jadot de Ville-Issey in 1753 with its façade clearly structured by light and shadow and the astronomic observatory visible behind. On the right of the narrow square is the Early Baroque façade of the Jesuit Church, while the view into the distance on the left is of the narrow Bäckerstrasse (Baker Street).
