Jacopo Strada (1515–1588) was an architect, goldsmith, soughtafter art expert and above all an internationally active antique dealer. The heavy gold chain distinguishes him as a member of court, the sword and the fur sliding from his right shoulder are evidence of his solid wealth. Strada’s posture is unique in Titian’s portraiture: the counter-movement of arms and head lend him dynamism and distance the observer. Whether Titian meant here subtly to criticise Strada’s occasionally aggressive business dealings remains a matter of debate.
