about 1656/57, Circle: Rembrandt Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn
Rembrandt’s self-portraits range from depictions in historicalseeming costumes, portraits in working clothes to fantasy images. The biretta that derives from 16th century fashion became Rembrandt’s hallmark. The gold chain is likewise one of the painter’s recurring accessories dating back to his early selfportraits. The painting’s condition makes it difficult to attribute it with any certainty.
