Sebastian war der Anführer der Leibwache des römischen Kaisers Diocletian und wurde wegen seines christlichen Glaubens zum Tod verurteilt. Der Heilige erfuhr weiteste Verehrung und wurde besonders in Pestzeiten als Nothelfer (gegen "Pestpfeile") angerufen. Aus diesem Anlass - 1456/57 wütete die Pest in Padua - könnte die Tafel entstanden sein. Für Mantegna, den Gründer der Frührenaissancemalerei in Oberitalien, war die Antike das stets präsente Vorbild: Die einer Steinskulptur gleichende Aktfigur des Märtyrers ist vor einer antikisierenden Architekturkulisse platziert, die durch die griechisch geschriebene Signatur ("das Werk des Andrea") an der linken Pfeilerkante noch "authentischer" wirkt.
