On 2 April 1810, Napoleon (1769-1821) married Archduchess Marie Louise (1791-1847), the eldest daughter of his political opponent, the Holy Roman Emperor Francis II (Francis I of Austria), who had agreed to the marriage to secure political tranquillity. Intended as companion pieces, the portrait miniatures on ivory were probably created on the occasion of the wedding in Paris. Clad in his wedding tail coat, the French emperor (see illustration on page 164) stands in front of a massive throne of gilded bronze. The famous Regent diamond from the French crown jewels is visible in the hilt of his sword. Across his chest the emperor is wearing the Chain of the Legion of Honour and the Grand Cross of the Napoleonic Order of the Iron Crown. The golden laurel wreath with which Napoleon crowned himself emperor in the presence of Pope Pius VII in 1804 can be seen at the left edge of the painting.
