Anton Perrenot de Granvelle

1549, Artist: Anthonis Mor van Dashorst

Anton Perrenot de Granvelle

Granvelle (1517–1586), son of Emperor Charles V’s powerful state minister, Nicolas de Granvelle, laid down Spanish policy in the Netherlands around the middle of the 16th century. When he took part in the Augsburg Parliament in 1548, he was accompanied by Anthonis Mor, a young painter of Dutch origin. Mor’s portraits combined sharply realistic observation with a deliberate emphasis on form which submitted the subject portrayed to strict principles.
