Access to the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna for blind or partially sighted visitors

The Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna houses one of the world’s greatest collections of Old Masters, and it is our responsibility to preserve this world heritage for future generations. And we want ALL our visitors to experience our museum as a vibrant place of exhibitions, research, documentation, collecting, preservation and education.

Gemeinsam anders sehen! (seeing things differently together) The somewhat different gallery tour for people with or without visual impairment; Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, 2014

In 2014, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna introduced a range of facilities and events for blind and partially sighted visitors: in addition to our highly-successful inclusive gallery tour Gemeinsam anders sehen (Seeing things differently together), visitors are invited to “feel” two masterpieces from the museum’s collection – Raphael’s Madonna in the Meadows and Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s The Fight between Carnival and Lent – carefully reproduced as tactile reliefs.

From the beginning, these projects were conceived with a focus on inclusion rather than as programmes for supposedly disadvantaged groups. All visitors are invited to confront and analyse the visuals, and to experience the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna as a place of sensory encounters. Our tactile education programmes add a special dimension to this endeavour.

We hope to continually expand our offer of programmes and facilities for blind or partially sighted visitors, and we closely collaborate with expert partners who help our docents to realize these projects on the highest possible level.

Our goal is to enable ALL our visitors to enjoy and experience art in a unique way.

Your contribution is vital to help us realize this goal. Thank you very much for your support!
