Bringing the Battle of Pavia tapestries to the United States: a curator's reflections on an American tour
A lecture by Jeffrey Fraiman, PhD, Assistant Curator of European Decorative Arts and Sculpture, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco
In 1525, the imperial army of Emperor Charles V defeated the French troops on the battlefield in Pavia in Northern Italy, an event that had profound consequences for European geopolitical history. These events were memorialized in a series of seven monumental tapestries woven after designs by Brussels court artist Bernard van Orley and presented to the Emperor in Brussels in 1531. Revolutionary in their artistic approach as well as in their capturing of contemporary history, the complete tapestry cycle traveled to the United States for the first time this year, commemorating the 500-year anniversary of the Battle. This lecture considers the historic presentation of these tapestries across three different venues: the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, considering approaches to narrative and sequencing, technical innovations in weaving, and the understanding and museological interpretation of monumental tapestries in our contemporary world.
Der Vortrag findet in englischer Sprache statt.
Bei dieser Führung wird die Ausstellung "Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer" besucht.
