The Raising of the Cross
around 1525 | Wolfgang Huber
Filled with figures and lively activity, this depiction of the Raising of the Cross was probably part of the larger context of a winged altar. It may have been the crowning element of the centre panel. This would explain the marked figural foreshortening that makes the head of Christ seem consciously ugly. This grotesque head and others are related to studies that the artist drew.
