Raid on a Wagon

Raid on a Wagon

Sebastian Vrancx was not just a painter and poet, he was also an officer in the Antwerp Fencing Guild. Perhaps this explains his preference for warlike scenes and robberies that he blends as decoration into landscapes by painters who are friends of his. The war that the Netherlands was waging with Spain at the time provided Vrancx with more than enough macabre material to observe.
