1634/1635, Artist: Anthonis van Dyck
Im November 1634 kamen Filippo Francesco (1621–1653) und sein jüngerer Bruder Carlo Emmanuele (1622–1695), die Söhne von Sigismondo d’Este, im Gefolge des neu ernannten spanischen Statthalters, Kardinal Infant Ferdinand, in die Niederlande. Van Dyck porträtierte die Prinzen während seiner dritten Antwerpener Periode 1634/35 in Brüssel. Ihre höfisch-spanische Tracht unterstreicht die katholische Erziehung der Prinzen und hat dazu beigetragen, die frühere Identifizierung der Dargestellten mit den Kindern des protestantischen „Winterkönigs“ Friedrich V. von der Pfalz zu widerlegen.
