Sebastiano Venier (gest. 1578) (Im Hintergrund: Die Seeschlacht bei Lepanto)

Venier (1496-1578) war Oberbefehlshaber der venezianischen Flotte in der Seeschlacht bei Lepanto. An seine Verdienste bei diesem entscheidenden Sieg der alliierten Flotten Venedigs, Spaniens und des hl. Stuhls über die Türken, 1571, soll das Bildnis erinnern. Bei Porträtaufträgen wie diesem, die an Tintoretto als Staatsmaler der Republik Venedig ergingen, hatte das Moment äußerlicher Repräsentation im Vordergrund zu stehen.
