Die Kugellaufuhr: eine Erfindung für Kaiser Rudolf II.
Der Hofuhrmacher Christoph Margraf erfand als neues Prinzip der Zeitmessung die Kugellaufuhr. Dabei rollt eine Kugel im Zickzack über eine Scheibe, bringt eine weitere Kugel in Bewegung und wird selbst von einem Mechanismus wieder an den Anfang gehoben. Ein Zählwerk überträgt diese Läufe auf ein Ziffernblatt. Erhalten haben sich nur drei Beispiele dieses Prinzips. Ihre Gehäuse zeigen Schaubühnen mit Spiegeleffekten und Szenerien.
