Filippo Francesco d'Este, Marchese di Lanzo (1621-1653) mit Hund
Im November 1634 kamen Filippo Francesco und Carlo Emmanuele (1622-1695), die Söhne von Sigismondo d'Este, im Gefolge des neu ernannten spanischen Statthalters, Kardinal-Infant Ferdinand, in die Niederlande. Van Dyck porträtierte die Prinzen während seiner dritten Antwerpener Periode 1634/35 in Brüssel. Carlo Emmanuele, Marchese di Borgomanero - von 1681 bis 1695 spanischer Botschafter in Wien - wurde später der wichtigste Förderer seines Neffen, des Prinzen Eugen von Savoyen.
