Selbstmord der Kleopatra

Die letzte Königin Ägyptens, Kleopatra, ließ sich durch den Biss einer Giftschlange töten, um der Schmach zu entgehen, im Triumphzug des Augustus durch Rom geführt zu werden. Cagnacci war am Ende seines Lebens Hofmaler in Wien. In diesem Bild verbinden sich zwei gegensätzliche malerische Konzepte: der scharf beobachtende Realismus der ausdrucksvollen Dienerinnen mit der klassischen Haltung der ruhig und gelöst sitzenden Königin.
