Mit Ende des 16 Jahrhunderts hatte sich die Energie der venezianischen Malerei erschöpft. Durch den Zuzug auswärtiger Meister wie Fetti, Strozzi und Liss profotierte die Malerei der Serenissima und gelangte wieder zu besonderer Qualität, die solche Meisterwerke von Canaletto, Guardi und Tiepolo möglich machten.
