Centrepiece

dated 1639 , Artist: Markus Heiden

Centrepiece

According to written statements by the artist, this daringly constructed double cup represents a call for resolution in faith. As the elephant supports those he carries, the ship of the church aids its believers in the battle against the world’s temptations, symbolized by the dragon in the middle. The Duke of Saxony-Weimar gave this showpiece to Emperor Ferdinand III as a gift.
