Das im 17. Jh. zersägte und daher nur noch als Fragment erhaltene Altarbild für die Kirche San Cassiano in Venedig zeigte ursprünglich die in einem Kircheninnenraum thronende Madonna und acht Heilige (heute: Nikolaus von Bari, Anastasia (?), Ursula, Dominikus und Helena). Ebenso zukunftsweisend wie dieser neue Typus eines Altarbildes ("Sacra Conversazione") war die in Venedig erstmals verwendete Technik der Ölmalerei, die Antonello in Neapel durch franko-flämische Maler kennengelernt hatte.
