Portrait of a Knight of an Order

1531, Artist: Bartholomäus Bruyn d. Ä.

Portrait of a Knight of an Order

In his numerous portraits, Bruyn conveys a vivid impression of the bourgeoisie of his home city Cologne and the aristocracy of the Lower Rhine region. His paintings are mainly influenced by the Dutch painters. The death’s head, hourglass and Latin inscription all serve to remind the viewer of the transience of existence.
