Infanta Margarita (1651–1673)

The portrait of the Spanish Infanta Margarita, daughter of King Philip IV and Mariana of Austria, in a silver, light-pink dress is the work of Velázquez’ son-in-law and studio assistant Mazo, who became court painter after the masters death in 1660. The brooch in the shape of the twin-headed eagle refers to the engagement of Margarita to Emperor Leopold I in 1663. A second version of the portrait is in the Museo del Prado, Madrid.

Location: Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, Kabinett 10
