1728, Artist: Francesco Solimena
The director of imperial buildings, Gundacker Count Althann, is presenting Charles VI with the inventory of the imperial art collections. The occasion for this paean to a Baroque ruler was the concentration and redisplay of the Habsburg artworks in Vienna’s Stallburg. The emperor commissioned this picture from the most important Neapolitan painter, Francesco Solimena. The portrait heads of Charles and his director of buildings were added in Vienna by the painter Johann Gottfried Auerbach.
