about 1604/05, Artist: Peter Paul Rubens
From 1600 to 1608 Rubens was court painter to Duke Vincenzo I Gonzaga in Mantua. For the Jesuit Church there he created a large altar triptych of the Gonzaga family worshipping the Holy Trinity. The altarpiece was cut into several pieces in 1801. This small fragment depicts Vincenzo II (1594–1627), a son of the duke. Rubens’s fluid and broad application of paint and his coloration, which was influenced by Venetian painting, fit the spontaneity of the youth, who as the youngest of those depicted gazes carelessly from the painting and directly at the viewer. Provenance: acquired in 1908
