around 1513/14, Artist: Raffaello Santi gen. Raffael und Werkstatt
The theme of “Rest During the Flight” evoked by the mule that Joseph holds and the palms lend this evening scene a romantic tone. An original drawing of the child and a wide range of painted versions prove the direct link of this picture to Raphael, even if his assistants may have carried out – or assisted in carrying out – this one in Vienna.
