Mit der Figur des Goliath habe Klimt auf den David Michelangelos anspielen wollen, ohne sich jedoch an das „Werk selber anzulehnen“. Unter dem abgeschlagenen Kopf im Interkolumnium brachte er die Inschrift an (hier in Übersetzung): „Wen Gott verderben will, den verblendet er zuvor“ oder „Wen Gott verderben will, dem nimmt er zunächst den Verstand.“ Am Arkadenbogen rechts gibt die Venusgestalt das weibliche Pendant. Die intensive Antikenrezeption stellte Klimt als stärkstes Charakteristikum der Kunst des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts in Italien heraus. An der Basis der Inschrift kombinierte er seine Signatur mit einem delikaten Lorbeerstillleben.
