Selbstbildnis im Konvexspiegel

Nach seiner Ankunft in Rom schenkte der junge Künstler sein auf ein gewölbtes Holzstück gemaltes Selbstporträt Papst Clemens VII., um den großen Mäzen für Aufträge zu gewinnen. So bescheiden das Format und verhalten die Farbigkeit, so geistreich ist der Einfall und hoch der Anspruch: Das Verwirrspiel "Spiegel oder Bild" trifft das Wesen der neuzeitlichen Malerei, das da ist Täuschung und Illusion.
