Riemenschneider schuf mit seiner großen und arbeitsteilig organisierten Werkstatt zahlreiche Bildhauerarbeiten zur Ausstattung von Kirchen. Dieses großformatige Marienbild stand ehemals sicher im Zentrum eines Altarretabels. Es zeigt Maria als „Apokalyptische Frau“ mit goldenem Mantel und Mondsichel. Die Nacktheit des demonstrativ zur Schau gestellten Jesusknaben betont die Menschwerdung des Gottessohnes.
