Aus Anlass der Wahl seines Sohnes Joseph I. zum Nachfolger im Reich (1690) gab Kaiser Leopold I. zwei Reiterbildnisse aus Elfenbein in Auftrag. Die Statuette mit Joseph I. zeigt den Jugendlichen als Friedensbringer, der über die Figur des Kriegsschreckens hinweg reitet. Steinl schuf mit dem Doppeldenkmal ein in Hinblick auf Form, Technik und Inhalt einzigartiges Meisterwerk der barocken Elfenbeinkunst.
